About

What it actually is.

Westerner Days is Red Deer's biggest annual gathering - five days in mid-July when Westerner Park turns into a fair, a concert venue and an agricultural showcase at the same time. It is the event most Central Albertans mean when they say "the fair," and for a lot of families in the region attending it is simply what mid-July is.

The fair has three overlapping personalities. There is the midway, with its rides, games and the food row that people plan their whole visit around. There is the entertainment programme - a grandstand concert series that mixes country headliners with rock and pop acts, plus free stages scattered across the grounds. And there is the agricultural core the fair grew out of: livestock shows, heavy horse events, 4-H competitions and the ag pavilions where the region's farm sector meets the public.

Because Westerner Park sits inside the city, Westerner Days works differently from a rural fair. Transit runs to the gates, downtown Red Deer is minutes away, and a large share of the crowd comes for one evening rather than the whole run. That makes it an easy first stop for newcomers who want to meet Central Alberta at its most sociable without committing to a road trip.

The parade through downtown Red Deer opens the week and is worth setting an alarm for - it is the one moment the whole fair spills out of the park and into the city itself.

Before you go

What locals would tell you.

Buy midway ride passes in advance - the walk-up price is noticeably higher.

Parking at the park fills fast on concert nights; transit and the park-and-ride are faster.

Afternoons are the quietest window if you are bringing small children.

Check the free-stage schedule before you go - the best programming is often not the headliner.

There's something on every weekend.

Rodeos, markets, festivals and cultural celebrations run twelve months a year across Central Alberta. See the whole calendar.
